Reports To: Director of Product and Platform Engineering
Position Summary The Spec Engineer owns the completeness, precision, and living accuracy of the specifications that drive autonomous, agent-executed builds. This role is the translation layer between business intent and machine-executable instruction: where traditional development tolerated ambiguity because a human developer would ask a clarifying question mid-build, agentic development requires that ambiguity be resolved before code generation begins. The Spec Engineer exists to close that gap.
Key Responsibilities
- Interrogate ambiguity before it reaches implementation — actively surface unresolved questions (edge cases, behavioral choices, rate limits, failure modes) back to the business rather than allowing agents to silently assume an answer.
- Write goal-oriented specifications: PRD-style statements of intent so agents optimize for the correct target, expanded with SRS-style precision so agents generate correct, testable code.
- Maintain each spec as a version-controlled living artifact, updated continuously as decisions are made or discovered during the build — the spec is ground truth, never a stale point-in-time document.
- Own the plan-review checkpoint: no code generation proceeds until a human has reviewed, edited, and approved the agent's plan file.
- Curate the canonical standards library — the data-model standard, business-rules catalog, and coding standards — so that every spec references shared standards rather than re-describing them.
- Partner with Architects and Platform Engineers during the plan-approval handoff to ensure the approved spec decomposes cleanly into an executable task graph.
- Facilitate structured requirements sessions with business stakeholders, converting conversational intent into unambiguous, versioned specification language.
- 3+ years in business analysis, systems analysis, or technical requirements engineering, ideally in an enterprise or regulated environment.
- Demonstrated ability to write clear, structured technical documentation (PRD, SRS, or equivalent) and to distinguish intent-level requirements from implementation-level precision.
- Working knowledge of data modeling and business-rule documentation conventions.
- Comfort working in a version-controlled repository (GitHub or equivalent) and treating documentation as code.
- Familiarity with Cloud platforms like AWS, and containerization models like Kubernetes
- Strong stakeholder-facing communication skills — able to press executives and SMEs for decisions on edge cases without stalling delivery.
- Prior exposure to spec-driven development workflows or tools (e.g., Claude Code, AWS Kiro, GitHub Spec-kit).
- Familiarity with Python and Typescript
- Background in software design or architecture sufficient to anticipate implementation ambiguity before it becomes a defect.
- Familiarity with the property and casualty insurance terminology, e-commerce, and professional licensure and education (e.g., licensing/compliance data models, Oracle-backed transactional systems
