Business Systems Analyst (Entry Level)

Job Overview
At an entry level, the Business Systems Analyst serves as a liaison between technical staff and end-users of software applications to ensure functionality and efficient use of systems supporting moderately complex business processes.

This role may specialize in a particular enterprise application (such as PeopleSoft, Maximo, etc.) or participate in implementing multiple applications that support various business processes. The position focuses on analyzing business needs, documenting requirements, and translating them into system specifications.

The Business Systems Analyst develops competence by performing structured assignments and receives instruction, guidance, and direction from supervisors, managers, and more experienced colleagues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a liaison between business departments and technical teams to translate business needs into technical solutions through software development or software purchase and configuration.

  • Assist in developing business cases for technology solutions and participate in build-versus-buy decisions on project teams.

  • Analyze business operations to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to automate or improve processes and functions.

  • Document business requirements used to develop technical solutions.

  • Manage changes to system requirements from project initiation through final implementation to ensure requirements are met.

  • Partner with technology staff and vendors during software development, configuration, and upgrade/enhancement efforts.

  • Assist in configuring purchased software to meet desired functionality.

  • Support end users of enterprise applications by:

    • Reviewing and auditing user access

    • Designing and developing training materials

    • Training end users

    • Delivering reports that support business operations

    • Maintaining online system documentation

    • Researching and correcting moderately complex system errors

    • Tracking system issues and resolutions

  • Perform system testing to ensure proper functionality.

  • Develop test plans and test cases when required.

  • Assist in developing and implementing standardized procedures for:

    • Business systems analysis

    • Business process mapping

    • Business requirements documentation

Employees may also be asked to perform additional job-related duties as assigned by supervisors or management.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience developing and documenting business requirements and serving as a liaison between business stakeholders and IT teams.

  • A degree in Business, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field may substitute for certain years of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge
  • Business systems analysis and business process management techniques

  • ERP and Work Management Systems

  • Data warehousing concepts

  • SQL

  • IT system development life cycle (SDLC) methodologies

  • Project management techniques

  • Business processes in assigned areas

Skills
  • Facilitating small to medium groups of business users

  • Communicating between business teams and IT developers

  • Documenting and presenting information to non-technical audiences

  • Verbal and written communication

  • Planning, scheduling, and prioritizing work

  • Documenting moderately complex business processes and problems

Technical Skills
  • Intermediate skill level in supported enterprise applications (when specializing in a specific system)

  • Intermediate proficiency in office productivity tools (email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.)

Abilities
  • Work effectively on large project teams with multiple competing priorities

  • Balance high-priority work demands

  • Meet deadlines under tight time constraints

Work Environment Work is primarily performed in an office environment.

Physical Demands The role requires frequent use of a computer, including constant finger and hand movement while using a keyboard and mouse.
