***Ideal profile is someone who has worked as a Tech Lead and managed 3-4 resources or more, mid size company with SaaS type product focus***

Senior Software Engineer – Services
Position Overview
  • Our client is seeking a Senior Software Engineer – Services to help mature and scale the cloud-based microservices platform that powers its customer-facing products and operational systems.
  • This role is comparable to a technical lead position. The successful candidate will lead a small team of approximately three to four engineers, guide moderately complex projects, mentor junior developers, and contribute hands-on throughout the full software development lifecycle.
  • The ideal candidate has approximately seven to ten years of software engineering experience and is already operating at a senior or technical-lead level. This person should be comfortable working across databases, APIs, user-interface integrations, batch jobs, and asynchronous messaging workflows.
  • The primary technology environment includes Kotlin, JVM/Spring, Kafka, Postgres, Kubernetes, and Google Cloud Platform. Experience with other languages and cloud platforms is welcome.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead a small engineering team through the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of complex, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Produce architectural proposals and participate in technical design discussions and platform-evolution decisions.
  • Coordinate work across multiple services, teams, and project dependencies.
  • Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to evaluate technical feasibility and design effective solutions.
  • Design, build, and operate scalable microservices backed by relational and non-relational databases.
  • Develop and integrate RESTful APIs, batch processes, and asynchronous messaging workflows.
  • Work with Kafka to support event-driven communication between product, inventory, checkout, and warehouse systems.
  • Design and optimize data models, database schemas, and queries supporting systems with hundreds of millions of records.
  • Refactor and improve data structures, including the use of denormalization and event-driven data flows where appropriate.
  • Deliver the full lifecycle of production-ready features, including design, coding, testing, configuration, documentation, deployment, and operational support.
  • Use feature flags and other deployment strategies to keep live systems stable while changes are introduced.
  • Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, pair programming, design discussions, and technical guidance.
  • Review work, identify risks, escalate issues, and help keep project dependencies aligned.
  • Participate in incident response, operational support, and post-mortem analysis.
  • Contribute to system reliability practices, development standards, tooling, and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with QA and Platform Engineering to maintain effective testing and integrated development environments.
  • Provide technical guidance to cross-functional teams regarding integration approaches, system constraints, and architectural tradeoffs.
  • Contribute improvements to the CI/CD pipeline as appropriate. We are transitioning from Harness to GitHub Actions, with the pipeline primarily maintained
by the operations team.

Representative Project Scope
A typical initiative may involve expanding the platform to support both renting and purchasing products. The work could include:
  • Updating product data models and APIs to support new product categories.
  • Consuming product updates from Kafka topics.
  • Enhancing cart services to support rental and purchase items simultaneously.
  • Updating APIs to distinguish between rental and purchase transactions.
  • Using Kafka-based asynchronous workflows to call inventory systems and reserve items.
  • Implementing time-based batch jobs to expire cart reservations.
  • Publishing order information to Kafka topics for warehouse processing.
  • Coordinating approximately 50 Jira stories across multiple services and teams.
  • Using feature flags to maintain system availability during the rollout.
Projects of this scope typically take approximately six months and require broad architectural understanding across databases, APIs, messaging, batch processing, and customer-facing services.

Required Qualifications
  • Approximately seven to ten years of software engineering experience, including demonstrated senior-level or technical-lead responsibilities.
  • Experience leading a small team or coordinating the technical delivery of moderately complex projects.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Kotlin, Java, Scala, or another JVM-based language.
  • Experience with Spring or Spring Boot; Kotlin and JVM/Spring experience are strongly preferred.
  • Strong experience designing, building, and operating microservices.
  • Experience with Kafka or comparable messaging and event-streaming technologies; Kafka experience is critical.
  • Hands-on experience with Postgres or another relational database, including data modeling, query optimization, schema evolution, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with RESTful APIs, HTTP protocols, and service-integration patterns.
  • Understanding of distributed systems, consistency models, asynchronous processing, and microservices tradeoffs.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or comparable container technologies.
  • Experience with GCP or another major cloud platform such as AWS or Azure.
  • Exposure to full-stack systems, including UI-integrated services, APIs, batch jobs, databases, and asynchronous workflows.
  • Strong understanding of software testing, automated testing, test-driven development, and reliable production systems.
  • Ability to quickly understand an existing codebase, architecture, and toolset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across engineering, product, QA, platform, and other functional teams.
  • Ability to work independently, make sound technical decisions, and provide constructive technical leadership.

AI-Assisted Development Expectations
We have implemented a spec-driven development workflow across its engineering teams. Engineers use AI tools to help create technical specifications, execute against those specifications, and peer-review the resulting work.

Candidates are not required to have experience with this exact AI harness, but they must be open to adopting mandated AI-assisted development tools and workflows. Candidates should demonstrate:
  • Practical experience using tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or comparable platforms.
  • Excitement and willingness to use AI-assisted development as part of everyday engineering work.
  • Understanding of prompt engineering and how to provide effective technical context to AI tools.
  • Familiarity with structured AI guidance, including system prompts, rules files, agent configurations, or similar approaches.
  • Understanding of AI tool integrations, connectors, MCP, and agentic workflows.
  • Ability to identify opportunities where AI can improve engineering efficiency and quality.
  • Strong architectural judgment to define, review, and validate AI-generated specifications and code.
Experience designing or building an AI development harness for an engineering team is a plus and may be relevant to additional opportunities within the organization.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Kafka-based event-driven architectures at scale.
  • Experience with Kubernetes service design and zero-downtime deployment practices.
  • Experience with GCP services, although AWS or Azure experience is transferable.
  • Experience with TypeScript, Python, or other programming languages.
  • Experience supporting high-volume, customer-facing systems.
  • Experience improving query performance and optimizing databases with large data volumes.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools, GitHub Actions, Harness, or comparable platforms.
  • Experience with feature flags, progressive delivery, and production rollout strategies.
  • Experience participating in incident response and post-mortem processes.
