Duration: 6 month with possibility for extension
Title: Sample Acquisition Specialist
Pay: $22-25/hr DOE
Schedule: M-F 9-5:30pm
***This role requires local travel between Loveland, Boulder, and veterinary clinic locations approximately 1-2 times/week. Candidates must have reliable transportation, be comfortable using their own vehicle for work-related travel, and have a clean driving record. Mileage is reimbursed through timecards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Knowledge of clinical veterinary sample collection including whole blood in various stabilization solutions, plasma and serum collections, clinical sample preservation, laboratory procedures, sample banking, and extraction with emphasis on clinical validation of new veterinary diagnostic testing methods.
- Understanding of and proficiency navigating LIMS and associated data systems.
- Collects biological samples for validation projects from different sources, including veterinary clinics, reference laboratories, and other approved sample sources.
- Supports expansion of existing sample collections consisting of serum, plasma, whole blood, tissue, needle aspirates of various body fluids (CSF, synovial, cysts, lymph nodes, etc.), stained material on glass slides, and formaldehyde fixed and paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks or scrolls.
- Catalogs and organizes samples into a central physical sample collection and computer database for R&D, including Molecular Diagnostics and Immunology.
- Cross-train and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab.
- Exercises judgment in evaluating and reporting results to supervisor.
- Performs laboratory equipment maintenance.
- Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures.
- Reads, understands and follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures. Maintains clean and organized work area.
- Knowledge in supply inventory and restocking as needed.
- Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.
- Consult with senior peers on troubleshooting problems.
- Reliable and dependable attendance is an essential function of the position. Adherence to attendance-related policies and expectations is critical to this position.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science, Biology, or related field required.
- Four years of experience as a Veterinary Technician in a clinical setting preferred. Strong Veterinary Assistant experience with hands-on clinical sample collection and sample handling may also be considered.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- General animal science, wildlife biology or basic sciences background, including biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology or zoology.
- Prior veterinary technician, veterinary assistant, animal hospital, veterinary clinic, or veterinary diagnostic sample handling experience strongly preferred.
- Organized with ability to multi-task in a fast paced R&D environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of an interactive team.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as appropriate.
- Knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE), and use to prevent exposure to zoonotic infectious agents.
- Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office.
