Quality Inspector

Planet is seeking a disciplined Contract Quality Inspector to support our satellite manufacturing programs. This role is focused on the tactical execution of inspections across all stages of production, ensuring that every component and subassembly meets our rigorous aerospace standards. This is a high-volume, execution-oriented position for a technician who excels at identifying mechanical and electrical anomalies in a fast-paced environment.

Impact You’ll Own

  • Production Inspection: Perform detailed physical inspections of incoming parts and in-process subassemblies to ensure 100% compliance with drawings and specifications. This includes inspecting a wide variety of hardware, from batches of 100+ cable assemblies to complex solar panels and sensors.

  • Mechanical and Electrical Verification: Utilize precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, drop gauges) to verify mechanical tolerances and perform visual inspections of electrical assemblies for solder and cabling defects. You will be responsible for ensuring threads are correct and fitment is exact for all metal parts and housings.

  • Microscopic Inspection: Conduct high-detail inspections of PCBAs under a microscope to identify solder defects, component misalignment, or contamination. This requires a high level of focus and attention to detail.

  • Non-Conformance Reporting: Meticulously record and report all quality anomalies using in-house software and Jira. You will be responsible for identifying non-conforming material and ensuring it is correctly tagged and moved to the MRB (Material Review Board) area.

  • Laboratory Standards: Maintain an organized, ESD-safe, and FOD-free inspection area, adhering strictly to cleanroom protocols.

  • Adaptability: Maintain extreme attention to detail while shifting between different types of hardware daily based on production priorities.

What You Bring

  • 5+ Years of Quality Inspection Experience: Proven background in a high-precision manufacturing environment, such as Aerospace, Medical Devices, or Defense.

  • Technical Interpretation: Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex mechanical drawings, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and electrical schematics.

  • Precision Measurement Mastery: Expert-level experience with manual and digital measurement tools to verify sub-millimeter tolerances and thread specifications.

  • Microscope Proficiency: Significant experience performing prolonged, detailed inspections under a microscope for fine-pitch electronics and delicate assemblies.

  • Build-Cycle Familiarity: Experience working within a production line where your role is to inspect and move hardware forward efficiently.

  • Software Proficiency: Comfort using Google Sheets, Jira, and proprietary tracking software to log high volumes of inspection data daily.

  • Attention to Detail: An uncompromising eye for detail and the ability to communicate technical issues clearly and concisely to engineering teams.

What Makes You Stand Out (Nice to have)

  • IPC-A-610 or J-STD-001 Certification: Specific experience inspecting high-reliability solder joints and electronic assemblies.

  • Experience with AS9100 or ISO 9001: Familiarity with the documentation rigor required for aerospace-grade quality management systems.

  • Material Review Board (MRB) Experience: Practical experience with the physical and digital handling of non-conforming materials.

  • Collaborative Mindset: The ability to act as a firm but professional gatekeeper of quality while maintaining strong working relationships with the assembly teams.
