The Launch Engineer for Exterior Systems is responsible for the technical issue resolution, maturation, validation, and production readiness of high-visibility exterior components. This role focuses on taking parts from the initial off-tool stage through to final production sign-off. You will apply first principles of mechanical engineering to root-cause complex launch issues, coordinate technical solutions with suppliers, cross-functional teams and ensure all systems – including Fascias, Lighting, Trim, and Active Aerodynamics – meet stringent quality and performance standards.
Responsibilities
-
- Root Cause Analysis: Lead the investigation of open launch issues, applying data-based RCA to develop solutions that balance performance, quality, cost, and program timing.
- Production Maturation: Manage the maturation of systems, including Exterior Trims, Fascias, Headlamps, GOR (Grille Opening Reinforcement), and AGS (Active Grille Shutter).
- On-Site Collaboration: Work closely with manufacturing partners and suppliers at the prototype office, plant or supplier sites to validate solution feasibility through prototype trials and pilot builds.
- Issue Tracking: Maintain disciplined tracking of launch open issues, ensuring next steps are clearly defined and executed to meet vehicle program milestones.
- Technical Validation: Oversee testing and validation of exterior systems to ensure they enable vehicle functionality and meet customer satisfaction targets.
- Design Liaison: Coordinate with Design Engineers to implement design-for-manufacturability (DFM) changes based on real-world launch feedback and trial results.
Qualifications
-
- Education: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience: 3+ years of experience in automotive engineering, specifically focused on vehicle launch, production maturation, or manufacturing engineering.
- Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of Exterior Systems (Fascias, Trim, Headlamps, AGS, or Wiper/Washer systems) and their manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, assembly, painting).
- Problem Solving: Proven expertise in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methods (e.g., 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone) to resolve complex mechanical and fit-and-finish issues.
- CAD Skills: Proficiency in CAD software (3DX/CATIA preferred) for the purpose of design interrogation, package review, and proposing engineering solutions.
- Communication: Excellent ability to lead cross-functional meetings between Tier-1 suppliers, cross-functional engineering teams and Assembly Plant personnel.
