Integration and Test Engineer – Functional Safety

The Functional Safety team ensures the product meets the safety caliber set forth within the company by leveraging existing standards, but also creating novel safety approaches to the unique problem of L2 and L3 autonomy. Our team is responsible for the entire safety lifecycle during the core development and application of the system into a serial-production vehicle.
Our team leverages a variety of backgrounds, ranging from robotics, systems engineering, high performance software development, and embedded and industrial software engineering. We collaborate closely with experts in machine learning, prediction/planning, sensor processing, and simulation from across product development teams to understand the systems they build, the possible failure modes, and how to detect and respond to those failures.

What you’ll do
  • Analyze safety software requirements and software implementation to translate them into comprehensive technical test cases
  • Implement test cases in a hardware in the loop (HIL) environment using the Google Test (GTest) framework
  • Leverage C++ message generators and serialization frameworks to construct complex test inputs and mock data for safety-critical modules
  • Write Python scripts and tools to support test execution, data generation, result analysis, and reporting
  • Integrate tests into a Bazel-based build and CI system, ensuring repeatable and deterministic execution
  • Collaborate with safety, systems, and software engineers to clarify requirements, assumptions, software implementation, and edge cases
  • Analyze test results, investigate failures, and provide clear root-cause analysis and actionable feedback
  • Contribute to Jama verification artifacts (test specifications, traceability, coverage evidence) to support safety compliance

What you’ll need to succeed
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field, and 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong C++ development skills, including experience writing testable code
  • Hands-on experience with Google Test (GTest) or similar C++ testing frameworks
  • Experience working with C++ message generation, serialization (e.g., Protobuf, IDL), or inter-process communication
  • Embedded Linux development or Linux systems experience
  • Working knowledge of Python for test automation, scripting, and data processing
  • Experience using Bazel or similar build systems to define and run automated tests
  • Familiarity with requirements-based testing and traceability concepts
  • Ability to read and interpret technical requirements and translate them into concrete, executable tests
  • Strong debugging and analytical skills, with attention to detail and correctness
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills

Nice to have
  • Experience with functional safety standards such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508
  • Experience testing embedded or real-time systems
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated test gating
  • Experience with creating test harnesses
  • Experience working with Jira, Jama, or similar requirements and issue-tracking tools
  • Exposure to fault-injection testing, negative testing, or robustness testing techniques
  • Experience with Python-based test orchestration frameworks (e.g., pytest)
  • Knowledge of message-based or middleware systems (IPC, pub/sub, etc.)

Note: The safety requirements are already defined, the safety software will be available for reference, and existing test case examples can be leveraged. As a result, extensive prior experience is not required. Design tradeoffs and PR reviews can be handled by FTEs on the software development, bench, or FuSa teams.

Estimated Min Rate: $55.00
Estimated Max Rate: $70.00
