JOB SUMMARY:

The Associate Counsel works with the Senior Counsel in providing legal review and counsel to the business teams in connection with the administration of the retirement plans of the company.. The Associate Counsel position is a key role for the Fund as it will include providing counsel to cross-functional teams and interacting with outside attorneys, requiring excellent interpersonal skills and teamwork.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Provide guidance to business teams on the application of legal requirements and plan terms to: day-to-day operational matters, creation and revision of benefit forms, communications and educational materials about the benefits, and tax reporting of distributions
• Research state law and provide related guidance with respect to trust, estate, and guardianship documents
• Review and respond to qualified domestic relations orders and work with paralegal on applicable document workflow
• Draft and review plan amendments, summary plan descriptions, and summaries of material modifications
• Identify potential compliance risks, analyze applicable correction programs, and escalate appropriately
• Track legislative, regulatory, and litigation developments impacting the organization’s benefits and services
• Review, draft, and negotiate vendor and service provider contracts, including identifying key risks and escalation issues.
• Provide material assistance in responding to external inquiries (from participating employers, participants, or regulatory bodies)
• Maintain active memberships and cultivate relationships with relevant professional organizations to foster knowledge development

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education (minimum needed):
J.D. from accredited law school and active bar admission in at least one U.S. state
Experience (minimum needed).
• 3 - 5 years of experience as an ERISA attorney
• Excellent analytical skills and superior writing and verbal communication, research, and teamwork skills required
Specialized knowledge needed:
• Familiarity with tax-qualified retirement plans and ERISA pension rules expected; knowledge of church plans a plus
• Knowledge of the requirements and opportunities of the Secure Act of 2019 and SECURE 2.0 Act for 403(b) plan and defined contribution plan matters and exposure to implementation
Specialized skills needed:
• Diverse problem-solving skills
• Communicate legal requirements in writing and verbally with non-lawyers
• Ability to handle high-volume, detail-oriented work independently

Estimated Min Rate: $150500.00
Estimated Max Rate: $215000.00
